On the Trail (piano quartet, substantial multi-movement)

$60.00

Composed in Summer 2018 after I spent a month as a student at the Rocky Ridge Music Festival in Estes Park, Colorado, On the Trail depicts a group of adventurers ascending and descending a path on a mountain! Eleven movements capture landscape views, animal friends, water features, and companionable hiking.

The primary compositional feature of the work is an extensive collection of recurring leitmotifs.  A march-like rhythm represents the mountain itself. Jaunty, quartal tunes represent steady hiking. Animal motifs include heavy bass octaves for elk, dissonant trills and flourishes for hummingbirds, and ferocious cello cadenzas for bears. Peaceful sustained melodies and gentle chromatic arpeggios for lakes and streams are later climactically reinterpreted as rivers and waterfalls. A soaring motif representing picturesque views from the summit is first introduced as a beautiful cello solo.

With memorable themes, passionate climaxes, and plenty of variety, On the Trail works well as the centerpiece of a chamber music recital! Three of my friends and I performed the world premiere! The performances were given at the Cleveland Institute of Music, split between three composition department recitals.

In 2026, I revised and edited the parts to look clean and fresh! Product is a zip folder containing piano score and string parts.
