Night Light (viola and piano, substantial multi-movement)
The terror of the dark; the warmth of blankets and bedtime stories; the monsters conjured by a rouge imagination; the eerie light of the moon; the joy and sunlight of a new day. These childhood memories of nighttime—some otherworldly, some concrete—inspired this work.
I consider Night Light my greatest achievement as a composer. This five-movement, 35-minute work contains all my favorite compositional devices. The intense and tumultuous “afraid of the dark” moves between octatonic cadenzas and heartrending themes. The luxurious “bedtime story” relaxes with c-string slow-movement beauty. The demonic scherzo “There are MONSTERS Under my BED!!” pairs a relentless bass-register piano ostinato with increasingly frantic rhythmic variations on top. The mysterious “Moonbeam” begins with an ice-cold augmented atmosphere, transitions to a warm and passionate second theme, and ends with a soaring climax. After a brief birdsong opening, “Daylight Delight” treats listeners to quirky recapitulations of previous themes in an asymmetrical meter, and concludes the work with a rousing finale.
It has never been played - you could be the first!!! Please explore the 22 provided sample pages to get an idea of how it would sound.
Product is a zip folder containing score and viola part.
